Before you update your Wordpress version

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

As we installed wordpress using our web host’s Fantastico, we also updated the wordpress via it. Along the way, we learn a few things and want to share it with you before you update your own wordpress blog

  1. Backup your Wordpress files and database
    You should do this consistantly even if you don’t update your wordpress version. You never know one fine day, you may lose your wordpress site
  2. Take note of files that you made changes to
    After the updates, we notice that our changes to our headers and some files are over-written by the original files. (more…)

Categories vs tags for WordPress

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

After 1 month since the launch of mobile.islikethat.com, I have been creating many blog posts. I thought I did a good job in carefully placing the post into categories and tags. Well, I was wrong. I have not been creating categories and tags properly related to the way i would like to organize my content.

The idea of categories is a more hierarchy way to store your post. I would be using categories as the main sections of my site. The categories will contain not more than 10. This will allow my blog contents to be more focus on the topics

For tagging, it is the in thing for blog site. So we tag a post with a related word(s) that best describe this particular post. I prefer to use the tag as the sub section of my site. So for each category, I have many tags. And each post can have more then 1 tag.

Oh. As of now, WordPress does not provide by default a page in the admin to manage your tags. So visit here to download the Simple Tags plugin.

Example here on how i organize my categories and tags on mobile.islikethat.com (more…)

Why you should have a Blogroll

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Blogroll is a very cool term for ‘links on your blog site’. It allows me to showcase links to my friends’ blog and also other favorite blogs at the sidebar of my Wordpress blog. Its like telling visitors on your blog ‘Here are some blogs that you might like to visit too’!

It feels great if you have other bloggers who add you into their blogroll. Its like you been accepted to their blogs(home).They feel the same when you add their blog site to my blogroll as well :D

To be accepted in their blogroll is a challenging 1. Your blog (more…)

15minutes new WordPress header for busy people

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Due to special request by Ndmervin on my previous WordPress post, I wrote this quick guide. As mention, i am using the default WordPress theme based on the famous Kubrick. So if you are using themes, you might have to tweak around abit. This is a unorthodox way to set up a header. Login to your admin portal

  1. Got to theme editor and edit style.css and find the text
    #header {
    background: #73a0c5 url(’images/kubrickheader.jpg’) no-repeat bottom center;
    }
  2. Notice the location. In your blog site web host, this image is located in
    wp-content/themes/default/images/kubrickheader.jpg
  3. The size of this image is 760×200pixels. So for your image to be use here, it has to be the same size.

My WordPress header with pictures of my own

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Yes, welcome my WordPress image header. I finally fit my own photo as my blog’s WordPress header. Time taken to do so:

  1. Research on how to insert image into WordPress header - 6 minutes
  2. Select my photo (This photo was taken at the beach at Sanya, Hanian in China by me!) - 3 minutes
  3. Chop and cut photo using Photoshop Elements - 5 minutes
  4. Upload to ftp and check website - less than 1 minute

Total: 15 minutes

Need more touching up to the image but it just feel good to be able to create something that I call my own.

This was the original picture. (more…)

How to display sidebar in every WordPress post

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

As times goes by, I will change my WordPress Theme bit by bit over time, improving my site design, layout and features. Today, I am going to display the sidebar in every of my blog post.

What is a sidebar? Sidebar is like the menu bar either on your left or right side of your blog posts(depends on where you place it). The default WordPress theme display the sidebar only on your main front. Well this means , your sidebar information such as your ads and category will not be display when viewing a individual blog post in your WordPress blog.

To change this, go to your theme editor in your WordPress admin portal. Edit (more…)

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Spam comments in your blog…most people hate them although some like them(for porn reasons). Spammer use programs and scripts to send out mass or millions of spam to comment on blogs.
