Know how your memory works

One day at a business networking session:
Me: Hi my name is Alien. What is your name?
Her: Hi my name is Susan.
Me: Nice to meet you. How did you find the speaker earlier?
Her: Great. The topic on abc was good.
Me: Yes. I agree as well…..(thinking =>*What was her name again?*)

Does this happen to you often? Forgetting the person’s name after a short conversion?

It does happen to me sometimes and I need to find a technique to remember names. I been also rather forgetful on some of the information which I read so I have to find some way to improve my memory.

To me, our memory is like a hard disk to store information. So we store those things we want to remember in our memory hard disk. Sometimes we forget things because we could not retrieve the information from our memory. The information is there but we just can’t find it.

Humans remembers things by:

  1. Sound such as..people talking
  2. Sight…what I see are recorded into memory like a (cranky)video recorder
  3. Touch….when I touch something, it resemble something and the image is created in my memory
  4. Smell

With the above techniques, we store them into my memory. How to do improve on storing more and quality information in my memory and yet improve the way I search for them? I have to:

  • repeat the information you have to store a couple of times
  • relate the information to something that excite or interest you. like Sue is a hot babe and you remember her surely or relate the information to yourself to make it more distinctive.
  • Having some emotions to something which I want to remember will help. This thing makes you happy or something made you very unhappy
  • Turn the information into a mini-story
  • Create a easy to remember singing tune of the information

As part of my 2008 resolutions coming up in my blog, improving my memory is one of my goal. How about you?

Another tip: to better remember something, think how the ’something’ will help you.
